Nature has been so kind to the people of Cross River State with a rare gem, a quintessential jewel and successful academic with a penchant for gender development and a proclivity to hard work; the young Helen Isamoh turned Hon. Dr (Mrs)Helen Isamoh Egodo, Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Cross River State who turns a year older today.
Helen Isamoh is an astute practicing politician and a top notch administrator whose trajectory traversed the classroom, local government administ ration, critical research, societal safety and security management. With an in- depth knowledge of delinquent and deviant behaviours, individual and societal reaction to crime, the consequences and effects of criminal activities and unholy behaviours in the society, Hon Helen Isamoh Egodo certainly remains Governor Otu's perfect choice for humanitarian services and poverty alleviation in this Season of Sweetness as she has meticulously demonstrated over the past eight months.
We are not oblivious to your strength and utmost determination to ameliorate the living standards of our people in the face of natural catastrophe and poverty related challenges. Your work ethics and diligence suggest that you have acted your part well just as Alexander Pope in his neoclassical poetry, An Essay on Man, where Pope wittingly presents a metaphysical philosophy that remains difficult to neglect: "Honour and shame from no condition rise; Act well your part, there all the honor lies". The English poet and satirist urges us to accept our position in the Great Chain of Being in which we can at least potentially, lead happy and virtuous lives just like Helen Isamoh Egodo strives always to put smiles on the faces of many Cross Riverians, refugees, prisoners, street and abandoned children through humanitarian services and poverty alleviation.
Today, as we share in the joy of your birth, we pray that you continue to remain willing and strong for many more years as one outstanding and unintimidated leader, and offer your quota for the development of Cross River State and Nigeria at large without compromise as Chinua Achebe, in his work, The Trouble with Nigeria succinctly captured: "The trouble with Nigeria is simply and squarely a failure of leadership. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian character. There is nothing wrong with the Nigerian land or climate or water or air or anything else. The Nigerian problem is the unwillingness or inability of its leaders to rise to the responsibility, to the challenge of personal example which are the hallmarks of true leadership". Dr Helen Isamoh remains the ideal example of a leader that Nigeria needs.
