On Friday, August 30, 2024, I received the report of the Peace and Reconciliation Committee, which I constituted nine months ago to resolve the lingering Ofatura and Ovonum crises. The committee, led by Hon. Chief Alex Irek, submitted its findings during my engagement with stakeholders at the Paramount Ruler's Office in Obubra.
While I commended the committee members for their tireless efforts and dedication to achieving a Memorandum of Understanding between the warring communities, I reiterated my commitment to restoring peace in the constituency and expressed deep concern over the frequent communal crises that have hindered progress in the Local Government Area.
I urged communities in the constituency to explore alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and praised the traditional rulers, political leaders, youth, and women groups for their cooperation and support. I assured them that the committee's recommendations will be fully implemented and that, when implemented, it would ensure the restoration of peace to the areas.
