On Wednesday, September 25, 2024, I chaired the House Committee on Public Petitions investigative hearing, during which we heard various petitions brought against individuals and organizations, including one from CEECEE-ANI Law Chambers.
The petitioner, Mr. Obi Livinus Ogar sought reinstatement to the National Assembly Service Commission after recovering from a protracted illness. He pleaded for our intervention to help him get justice, as the Commission has refused to reinstate him despite several efforts.
On their part, the National Assembly Service Commission's representative explained that the petitioner was employed by the National Assembly Management in 2000 but failed to verify his employment when the Commission was established in 2001. Thus, the Commission doesn't recognize him as one of their staff. Moreover, his whereabouts were unknown for twelve years.
During questioning, I asked the petitioner to further substantiate his claim by providing his employment letter and any other documents, which he did. The letter was passed over to the respondent, who acknowledged its authenticity but clarified that it was issued by the National Assembly Management, not the Service Commission. When asked about his twelve-year absence, the petitioner cited serious sickness, claiming that he had written an official letter to the Commission but misplaced it in the course of the illness.
Having ensured fair hearing for both parties and thoroughly considered the petition, we noticed discrepancies in the claims by the petitioner and therefore dismissed the case for lacking merit.
As chairman of the committee, I remain committed to promoting peace, accountability and transparency, ensuring that justice prevails in all matters brought before us. And most importantly, I remain committed to serving the illustrious people of Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency who did not only give me their mandate but have continued to inspire me with their supports and prayers.
